Overview

We Offer Matrix PRO, Not Morpheus8

Spectrum offers radiofrequency microneedling on Candela's Matrix PRO, performed by Dr. Munib. We do not own a Morpheus8 and do not offer it. We also run Secret PRO, which pairs RF microneedling with fractional CO2. Morpheus8 is InMode's bipolar fractional radiofrequency microneedling device, and for the right goal it does its job well. This page compares the two, including where Morpheus8 may be the better tool.

Both devices belong to the same category and work by the same principle. Needles create controlled micro injuries while radiofrequency heats tissue at depth, and the skin responds by laying down new collagen over the following months. Nobody should choose between them on the basis of which sounds more advanced.

The real variables are how deep the needles go, how many there are, how precisely depth and energy can be controlled, and who is choosing those settings. That last variable turns out to matter more than the first three, which is the argument this page makes.

Why Patients Choose Spectrum

What Morpheus8 Does Well, From a Clinic That Does Not Offer It

Almost every Morpheus8 page online was written by a practice that owns one. That makes them poor decision aids, because the conclusion was fixed before the writing started. We do not own one, so this page can say plainly what it is good at.

Dr. Munib has practiced cosmetic dermatology in the Irvine area for more than fifteen years and performs radiofrequency microneedling personally. Under California law this is a medical procedure that cannot be delegated to an esthetician regardless of supervision, so the person assessing your skin is the person choosing the depth.

Where the other device is better suited, or neither is the right treatment, the page says so.

The Decision

How the Two Platforms Compare

Four things separate them. One favors Morpheus8 outright.

01

Needle depth and what it reaches

Match the energy to the layer that actually holds the problem

Matrix PRO reaches past the dermis into the fat layer on the face. Morpheus8 reaches up to 4 mm on the face, and its body tips go deeper still, so on the face the difference in depth is modest. Where the goal is deeper work on the body, or contouring the fat layer under the chin or along the jaw, Morpheus8's extra reach is a real advantage. Depth is also where the reported complications come from, because the same heat that remodels fat can injure it.

02

Array density and coverage

Treat a given area evenly without stacking passes

Matrix PRO uses a 49 needle array in a 7 by 7 grid, each needle 0.16 mm wide. Morpheus8 uses roughly 12 to 24 needles on its facial tips. More, finer needles across the same area give denser, more even coverage per pass, which suits texture, pores and fine lines.

03

Depth control and feedback

Know what the tissue is doing during the pass, not after

Matrix PRO can deliver up to three preset depths in a single insertion while measuring the skin's resistance in real time. Treating several layers without stacking separate passes keeps heat from building up in one plane, which matters because the reported complications are dose related.

04

Who chooses the settings

Put the depth decision with the person who examined the patient

This matters more than the hardware. Both devices are safe in trained hands and both can cause harm at the wrong depth. Treatment here is performed by Dr. Munib rather than delegated, and settings are chosen conservatively for your anatomy rather than run from a fixed protocol.

Less depth than Morpheus8

Where Matrix PRO is limited

Matrix PRO does not go as deep as Morpheus8's body tips. Where a goal genuinely needs deeper fat-layer work, we will say so, and that may mean a different treatment or a referral.

How Radiofrequency Microneedling Actually Works

Insulated needles pass through the skin surface and deliver radiofrequency energy from their tips at a chosen depth. Each tip creates a small zone of intense heat while the insulation spares the surface, which is why this category can work at depth without the downtime of full ablative resurfacing.

The heat causes immediate collagen contraction and triggers a wound healing response, so fibroblasts lay down new collagen and elastin over the following months. The result builds gradually rather than appearing at once, and a series is usually advised.

Why depth is the whole argument

Depth determines which tissue absorbs the heat. Shallow treatment addresses surface texture, pores and fine lines. Deeper treatment reaches the reticular dermis and the fibrous septae that hold structure. Deeper still is fat, and fat is more vulnerable to thermal injury than dermis is.

This is why a device capable of 4 mm is neither better nor worse in the abstract. It is more capable and less forgiving. The setting matters more than the specification, and the setting is a clinical judgement made about your face by someone who has examined it.

Which Fits Which

Where Each Platform Is Suited, and Where It Is Not

Read down the left column to the concern that sounds like yours.

Presenting concern
What may help
What is weighed first
Surface texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and early laxity
Matrix. A denser, finer array treats the dermis evenly without needing to go deep.
Skin type, prior treatment history and how much downtime you can accept
Submental fullness, jowls or body areas where the fat layer is the target
Morpheus8 may be better suited, especially on the body, where its deeper tips reach further than our array.
Whether volume reduction is genuinely the goal, and the risk of overshooting it
Acne scarring
Either can help. Depth is matched to scar type rather than to a device preference.
Scar morphology, whether subcision or resurfacing should come first, and pigment risk
A thin or already hollow face
Caution with both, and particularly with deep settings. Volume loss is the risk to avoid.
Existing fat pad volume, age and whether volume restoration is the better first step
Significant skin laxity with true structural descent
Neither device reliably corrects this. That is a surgical conversation.
Degree of descent and whether a non-surgical result would meet the goal

Combined Approaches

What RF Microneedling Is Often Paired With

Concern
Often pairs with
Why
Texture with volume loss
Microneedling with filler or a biostimulator
Tightening a face that has lost volume can make hollowing more obvious. Assessing volume first prevents treating the wrong problem.
Scarring with tethering
Microneedling with subcision
A tethered scar is held down by fibrous bands. Energy alone will not release it, so the band is addressed first.
Texture with pigment or redness
Microneedling sequenced after pigment work
Treating pigment first gives a clearer read on the remaining texture and lowers the chance of a pigment response.

Candidacy

Who May Be a Candidate, and Who We Treat Cautiously

The consultation establishes which layer holds your concern. Surface texture, dermal laxity, scarring and volume loss produce overlapping complaints and are treated at different depths, so the assessment decides the settings rather than the other way round.

How Dr. Munib decides

She assesses skin thickness, existing facial fat volume, the depth of the concern, skin type and pigment risk, and prior treatment response. A thin or hollow face is treated conservatively or not at all at depth, because the downside of overtreatment is difficult to reverse.

Often a reasonable fit

Surface texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, early laxity or acne scarring, in a patient with adequate facial volume and realistic expectations of a gradual result.

Where we are cautious or decline

An already thin or hollow face, active inflammatory skin disease or infection, recent isotretinoin use, pregnancy, or an expectation of a surgical degree of lift. Where volume loss is the real complaint, treating it as laxity makes the appearance worse.

Timeline

What to Expect and When

Timepoint
What happens in the tissue
What you see
First 24 to 48 hours
Immediate collagen contraction and inflammatory response
Redness, swelling and a sandpaper texture are usual
Days 3 to 7
Surface recovery
Roughness settles and makeup is usually tolerated again
4 to 6 weeks
New collagen deposition
Early change in texture and firmness, and the point a further session is considered
3 to 6 months
Remodeling continues
The fuller effect of a completed series becomes apparent

A series of about three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart is usual. Timelines describe the typical pattern and are not a promise of any individual result.

Risks

Documented Risks of RF Microneedling

These apply to the category, including the platform we use. They are listed in full because the specific complication patients ask about is real.

Facial fat loss

Treating into the subcutaneous fat at too high a thermal dose can injure fat cells and reduce volume, which appears as hollowing in the cheeks, temples or under the eyes. It is not the intended outcome of facial treatment and it is difficult to reverse. It is the principal reason we treat thin faces conservatively.

Burns, blistering and scarring

Excessive energy, incorrect depth or poor technique can burn tissue and leave scarring. This is why the procedure is restricted to trained medical operators and, in California, cannot be delegated to an esthetician.

Pigment change

Heat injury can leave the skin darker (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) or, less often, lighter. The risk is higher in medium and deeper skin tones, with a history of pigment reactions, and with sun exposure around treatment. Energy and depth are set with your skin type in mind, sun protection before and after matters, and pigment-prone skin may be prepared before treatment.

Nerve injury

Nerve damage has been reported with radiofrequency microneedling. Anatomical knowledge of where nerves run superficially, and restraint with depth in those areas, is the protection.

Underwhelming result

Results build gradually and are modest compared with surgery. A patient expecting a lift will be disappointed regardless of which device is used, which is why expectations are discussed before treatment rather than after.

Risks, realistic expectations and the FDA communication are reviewed at consultation and documented in consent before any treatment is performed.

The FDA Safety Notice

On October 15, 2025 the FDA issued a safety communication, Potential Risks with Certain Uses of Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling, alerting patients and providers to serious reported complications including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage. You can read it in full at the link rather than relying on our summary of it.

That communication concerns the category. It applies to the platform we use as much as to Morpheus8, and we would rather you read it here than discover it afterwards. The FDA's own guidance is to seek treatment from a licensed provider with training and experience in these devices, which is the same conclusion this page reaches from the clinical side.

Device figures on this page come from each maker's published material: InMode, Morpheus8 and Candela Medical, Matrix RF microneedling. If you have had RF microneedling elsewhere and are worried about the result, bring your treatment details to your consultation and Dr. Munib will go through them with you.

Treatment here is performed by the physician rather than delegated, settings are chosen for your skin type and prior response rather than from a fixed protocol, and conservative settings across a series are preferred to maximum settings in a single visit.

Aftercare and Recovery

First 24 hours
Expect heat, redness and swelling. Avoid exercise, heat and anything that raises skin temperature.
Days 2 to 5
Gentle cleansing and a bland moisturizer only. Do not exfoliate or pick at the roughened surface.
Two weeks
Daily broad spectrum sun protection. Sun exposure after treatment raises the risk of pigment change.
Ongoing
Retinoids and acids are reintroduced once the skin has settled, on the timeline given at your visit.

Cost

What Affects Your Cost

For reference, published provider listings put Morpheus8 in Orange County at roughly $1,080 to $1,620 per session. We do not set that figure and do not offer the treatment. It is included because patients comparing options deserve to see the number rather than hunt for it.

Matrix PRO radiofrequency microneedling at Spectrum starts at $850 per session. Most patients are advised a series of about three, and the full plan is priced before anything begins so there is no running total during treatment. Where a combined approach is appropriate, that is quoted at the same time.

The Question Everyone Actually Types

Did Morpheus8 Ruin People's Skin, or Did the Settings?

It is one of the most searched phrases attached to this treatment, and the answer is uncomfortable for the whole industry rather than for one brand. The reported harms are real, they are documented, and the FDA has now formally communicated them. They are also overwhelmingly dose and depth related rather than evidence that a particular device is defective.

A device that reaches 4 mm is more capable and less forgiving. In trained hands treating the right patient at the right depth, that capability is exactly why someone would choose it. In the wrong hands, or run at maximum settings on a thin face, it is how volume is lost. The variable that changed between those two outcomes was not the logo.

This is also why we will not claim to offer Morpheus8 in order to capture the search and then substitute something else at the appointment. If your goal genuinely needs the depth Morpheus8 reaches, you will be told so, and where appropriate you will be referred.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

No. We offer Candela's Matrix PRO radiofrequency microneedling, performed by Dr. Munib, and we do not own a Morpheus8. Morpheus8 is a capable device, and this page explains what it does well, where its risk sits, and how the two compare. Patients ask about it constantly, so a straight answer is more useful than quietly steering you toward something else.

For the right indication it can be. Morpheus8 is bipolar fractional radiofrequency microneedling from InMode, with needles reaching up to 4 mm on the face and deeper tips for the body. Where you want to affect the fat layer, such as the submental area, jowls or body, that reach is a genuine advantage and we would not pretend otherwise. For surface texture, pores and fine lines, that depth is not what does the work.

The same depth that makes it powerful is where its risk sits. Treating into the fat layer at too high a thermal dose can injure fat cells and cause volume loss. On the face that reads as hollowing in the cheeks, temples or under the eyes, and it is not the intended outcome. This is a settings and technique issue rather than a defect in the device, which is precisely why the operator matters more than the badge on the machine.

Facial fat loss after radiofrequency microneedling is a reported complication and it is documented. On October 15, 2025 the FDA issued a safety communication titled Potential Risks with Certain Uses of Radiofrequency Microneedling, referencing reported burns, scarring, facial fat loss, disfigurement and nerve damage. That communication is about the category, not one brand, and it applies to the platform we use as well. The practical protection is a trained medical operator choosing conservative depth and energy for your anatomy, and stopping short of maximum settings.

Better is the wrong frame. These devices differ in array density, depth control and feedback rather than in whether they work. Candela's Matrix PRO uses a 49 needle array, each needle 0.16 mm wide, with up to three depths in a single insertion and real time feedback from the skin, which is a different design from fewer, deeper needles. Which suits you depends on whether your concern is surface quality or deeper structural change.

Published provider listings put Morpheus8 in Orange County at roughly $1,080 to $1,620 per session. We do not set that figure and do not offer the treatment. Matrix PRO radiofrequency microneedling at Spectrum starts at $850 per session. Most patients are advised a short series rather than a single visit, and the plan is priced before treatment begins.

For most patients a series of three is more realistic than two, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, with collagen remodeling continuing for months afterward. Anyone quoting a fixed number before examining your skin is guessing. The number of sessions depends on the depth of the concern, your age and how your tissue responds to the first treatment.
